Resources for Desistors
What is the Desistor Network?
The Desistor Network (DN) is a collaborative initiative between the Singapore Prison Service and its community partners to support ex-offenders in their journey towards desistance and successful reintegration into the community after their release. This focus
on longer-term desistance is particularly crucial, as statistics show that four in ten offenders return to prison within five years of release, which is double the number within two years of release.
To achieve this, SPS recognises that it is important to create an ecosystem of support for ex-offenders. Hence, the DN was launched on 15 April 2023, and it reflects a distinctive hallmark of co-partnership between the government and the community.
The DN seeks to create a strong community to harness and synergise individual desistors' strengths and collective network. With a circle of support from the community, ex-offenders can embark on a journey of change, while being reinforced and reinforcing others. Knowledge sharing, training and community resources will be made available to equip, empower and enable desistors to give back.
We believe that desistors have much good to contribute to society in meaningful ways. We have seen numerous instances where desistors who have learnt from their experiences in prison, turned their lives around and became contributing individuals in their respective communities. Yet, we believe so much more can be done to aid these desistors in this journey and fulfil their potential.
Through DN, we envision engaging every desistor, connecting & empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the community.
